Ned Rice is serving as the team's interim GM under president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail, who has already said he won't return after the 2021 season.

Reinsdorf has said letting La Russa go is one of his most regrettable decisions. Will he feel the same way about bringing back someone who, yes, is a Hall of Famer, but also is 76 and hasn't managed in a decade? If not La Russa, keep an eye on A. J. Hinch, whose suspension for ties to the Astros cheating scandal is up after this season. The Phillies' general manager job is attractive because the team has a proven manager in Joe Girardi (left). The White Sox manager job is also a coveted opening because of players such as Lucas Giolito (right). Getty Images; AP 2. Red Sox manager Boston is looking at a bit of rebuilding at a time when the Rays and Yankees are powerful, the Blue Jays are rising and even the Orioles are stirring a bit. But these are the Red Sox, which means there will be talent and money here when necessary, and a great fan base and history. There is strong buzz that Alex Cora, after a year suspension for his ties to the Astros' cheating scandal, will return. If not, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom — from the Rays' family tree — could be leaning toward a type that would grow with the roster, such as Tampa Bay bench coach Matt Quatraro or Sam Fuld, the Phillies' director of integrative baseball performance.
If you stand out in every position you occupy in MLB, then you establish a network. The essential qualifications to become an MLB GM is the demonstration of loyalty to the sport, positive energy, and expertise in every aspect of the position.
Because it doesn't work that way anymore, not in any game, and particularly not in baseball. The power lies farther than ever from the top step, even as more is required from the man teetering upon it. Hinch is excellent. So's Joe Maddon. Bruce Bochy. Terry Francona. Bob Melvin. Dave Roberts. Others. Same time, you could squint and lean and see as many as eight managerial jobs open come winter. Even if it's four or five – St. Louis, Cincinnati, Anaheim, Baltimore and whatever happens from there – that's a lot, and the trend is toward first-timers, men not so far removed from clubhouses themselves, men who still look and sound like players, men who are analytics friendly, who lack the resume to be anything but what their bosses expect them to be. Every day. Which, granted, is like most other jobs. So I asked a half-dozen baseball folks – general managers, scouts, baseball operatives – who they like for the next wave of field managers. Their answers were not intended to produce the complete list of who's next, but to get a feel for what's out there beyond the usual candidates.
According to the Star Tribune's La Velle E. Neal III, the Phillies approached the Twins about two weeks ago for permission to speak with Levine. Neal reports that Phillies president Andy MacPhail -- who was the Twins' GM when they won two World Series in 1987 and '91 -- initiated the contact with Levine, who has been with the Twins since November 2016 and works with president of baseball operations Derek Falvey. With Levine out of the picture, Heyman reports that the team plans to interview former Marlins GM Michael Hill for the position. Heyman notes that Dodgers senior vice president of baseball operation Josh Byrnes also "appears [to be] strongly in mix, " and others could also be con Miami parted ways with Hill as his contract expired following the 2020 season, ending his 18-year tenure in the Marlins' front office. The club hired Kim Ng to replace him. Hill also reportedly interviewed with the Mets and the Angels before Los Angeles hired Perry Minasian as its new GM. Byrnes previously served as the GM for both the D-backs (2006-10) and Padres (2011-14) before joining the Dodgers in his current role following the '14 season.
This is not to say Houston Astros manager A. J. Hinch did or did not approve of his employer's decision to acquire a disreputable ballplayer in closer Roberto Osuna, because I don't know. This is to point out Hinch's job was to stand in front and justify it, much as his conscience may or may not have allowed. Some days you punch the clock. Others, it punches you. More than ever, problematic as a few managers can make it look, the game is the least of the gig. That leaves the other 21 hours of the day, those spent in modes of public relations, marketing, spin-doctoring, individual and group therapy, managing up (as well as down), brush-fire stomping, ego stroking (and stomping), fake smiling, go-along handshaking, medical reporting and no wonder so many are delivered lineup cards from their front offices, they'd barely have time to write them themselves. Oh yes, one other job: lineup-card-answering-for. When Mike Scioscia steps down in Anaheim, assuming he does, he will be the last to have worked for four general managers while with the same organization.

All of them missed the postseason festivities, but some hold more advantages than others... 8. Pittsburgh Outgoing: Clint Hurdle (Fired) The Pirates deserved props in the early going, keeping pace in the jam-packed NL Central at the All-Star break before a brutal second half commenced the end of the line for Hurdle. Enough has been made about the Pirates's trades of Gerrit Cole and Tyler Glasnow (Game 5 starters in the ALDS), but it's tough to feel enthusiastic about Pittsburgh's immediate chances in the aftermath with their current roster. 7. Kansas City Outgoing: Ned Yost (Retired) The fleeting good times are likewise gone in Kansas City, as the Royals are mired in another rebuild after their World Series visits.
Said one of those polled: "The brainpower bar has certainly been raised because there is so much information to manage, both up and down. " Said another: "New-age managers are more psychologists regarding handling players; 2) analytics majors for front office compatibility; 3) media props; 4) lastly, game strategists.
